After several years of being out of service, the City's Street Sweeper is back in service for the most part. It's been running pretty much on schedule. There has been a moratorium on the issuance of "No parking certain time" tickets" during the time the sweeper has been down.
The "No parking certain times" ordinance will be enforced starting September 1st. That means you have to move your car from the prescribed streets from 8am through 3 pm, Monday through Friday.
I've attached a schedule in the event you're not familiar with it. Pretty much all of the signs in the city have been updated to reflect the daytime parking restriction.
Please keep in mind, the ordinance is enforceable whether the sweeper runs or not, whether it rains, storms, or if it is out of service. It would be good to get into the habit of moving your cars now. Please share if you live in Salem. ... See MoreSee Less

With great sadness, the officers and members of the Salem Fire Department announce the untimely and unexpected passing of long-time SFD firefighter Lew Sheets. Lew was recently recognized for having served the SFD for over 50 years. He served in many capacities with the Union and Washington fire companies over the years, including fire line offices up to and including Battalion Chief. Most recently Lew simply enjoyed driving and helping around the firegrounds. His absence will be felt for a very long time, and we will miss our brother deeply ...
The passing of Lew marks the second such unexpected tragedy to befall the SFD family in as many weeks. In addition to the Sheets and Westcott families, please hold our brother and sister firefighters up high as they push through their grief ...

Traffic Alert: During the week of July 10th, SH Route 49 will not be closed. The section of Front Street between the Vet's Bridge and the light on West Broadway will be closed to install rail tracks. All traffic will detour to and from Griffith Street. The bridge will be accessible.
So, from Pennsville, all traffic will go to Griffith then to Market (or 4th or 5th if you prefer and you're not driving a tractor and trailer).
All traffic from Salem will detour to Griffith then over the bridge.
It may be a little congested, but I don't anticipate it adding any more than 5 minutes, if that, to your commute. ... See MoreSee Less

Thank you for the tribute to the fallen brothers. One of them being my hero and dad Donald Sharp. Thx again.
Thank you, past, present and future Firefighters
You know it takes a special person to do what a fire person does they risk their life by going in a building or house that fully in blaze of fire to make sure where not in it I feel that they should be treated just like someone in the service representing our country hats off to all of you guys an women that are in our fire safety programs God bless.
Looked at this again and just want to say that the very last photo is amazing. I bet you could sell copies of that easily.

For Them Training
Sometimes I cringe when I hear "water on the fire makes everything better."
Many fire scenarios posted on this page get someone suggesting the use of the deck gun for an offensive attack. I have to say, my opinion is that there ARE times where this is warranted. 1-2 room fires, however, maybe aren't those times.
Hold on and set your pitchfork down. Read a little bit more below before you post your comment.
I don't run a lot of fires at my department. I don't claim to be salty, and I don't claim to be an expert.
Now that I've laid down the disclaimer, here's how I feel. The blanket statement "Water on the fire makes everything better" is a very subjective statement when talked or posted about on the interwebs. Especially when talking about exterior streams. The UL tests on Governors Island showed that a proper stream from the outside at a proper GPM could reduce temperatures drastically. They also noted that, when improperly applied (moving the stream around even slightly), exterior streams can change the flow path within a house.
Water on the fire doesn't always make things better. There, I said it.
PROPER water on the fire can improve things, but IMPROPER water can make things drastically untenable inside. Tenability inside must be considered when we employ exterior fire streams. A fog pattern (think reverse hydraulic ventilation), an inappropriate angle of attack, or low GPM can cause more bad than good. I'm not just talking about exterior operations. Think about hauling a 30 degree fog pattern inside and moving the stream around.
Check out this video. It's a snippet of a longer video (see link below) showing tests with a deck gun stream applied through a window. The deck gun may come into play when wanting to knock down "big fire", say in an apartment building or large house" during the setup of operations. Chicago Fire uses this tactic among other departments. I've also seen it use to knock down successfully to knock down a large garage fire while lines are getting stretched.
But using it on room and contents fires? Consider this might not always "make things better."
I know the fire service tends to always cater to the lowest common denominator, so I hate to suggest this... but...
"Only PROPER water on the fire makes things better."
Often, "fast water" is preached - but what happens when we sacrifice quality/technique for speed and worsen the environment for them?

Units operated simultaneously with assistance from multiple mutual aid companies (fire, police, and ems). Both fires were under control within the 1 o'clock hour.
